Evidence of Identification

Miss Hughes left to catch the train at Tyne Dock, and nothing has since been heard of her. She had a set of false teeth and the melted gold of a palate of a set of artificial teeth was found at the scene of the accident. In the opinion of a dentist, the set had contained 10 teeth. This evidence dated 18 December 1915. Bertram Leonard Hughes, Brother of Kate Daisy Hughes, said that he could identify certain articles of clothing belonging to his sister. Dated Monday 20 December 1915.

Additional information

Bertram had joined the 22nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 30 November 1915, just three weeks before the disaster. He was sent join the B.E.F on the 16 June 1916. Sadly Bertram was killed in action on 28 October 1916 in the final phase of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in Benafray Wood Cemetery in France.

Kate and Bertram were both born in Maidstone Kent. Their mother Fanny Marry stayed in South Shields, her death is recorded there in March 1040 aged 80.
